HOT OFF THE PRESS!
Na ‘Āina Kai is the only Hawaiian garden included in a book which has just been published by Black Dog Publishing, London, entitled Botanic Gardens: A Living History. Along with commentary from directors and curators of the world’s principal botanic gardens, the book profiles and includes color photos of 85 gardens representing 50 countries and is the first comprehensive look at the past, present and future of botanical gardens. We are in very esteemed company as the gardens featured include: Bogor Botanic Garden (Indonesia); Royal Botanic Gardens of Sydney and Melbourne (Australia); Singapore Botanic Gardens; Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (South Africa); Beijing Botanic Garden (China); Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (London); The Eden Project (Cornwall, England); and in the United States Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (Miami); Missouri Botanical Gardens (St. Louis); New York Botanical Garden; Huntington Botanical Gardens (Los Angeles); and the United States Botanic Garden (Washington, DC).

From the Forward: “While it is impossible to include all of the world’s botanic gardens in one volume, the gardens profiled are among the most noteworthy, and were chosen for their special contribution to the past and present of these most important institutions.”

From the back cover: “Some of the world’s foremost botanists, scientists, artists and thinkers give a detailed account of the history and future of the botanical gardens in four essays on the subject interspersed with profiles of the most important botanic gardens from around the world.”

We are very excited about being included in this prestigious work. Copies will be available for purchase in our garden gift shop. For more information: Phone (808) 828-0525   E-Mail: Info@NaAinaKai.org

There’s A Giant in the Garden!
Author Helen Stuefloten and artist Patricia Tanguay have created a charming story book about Melia and Sadie who are anticipating a trip with their school class to a special children’s park. Melia’s brother has told her something scary— ”there’s a giant in the garden!” Follow the two young girls and their classmates on this exciting field trip to Na `Aina Kai’s “Under the Rainbow” Children’s Garden. The beautifully illustrated book is for sale at the Na `Aina Kai Visitor Center for $15, and all proceeds go to the development of new projects within the Gardens.

Hawai`i Tourism Authority Award
At the 15th Annual “Keep It Hawai`i” Recognition Awards program held on July 28, 2006 at the Hawai`i Convention Center, Na `Aina Kai Botanical Gardens received a Certificate of Merit from the Hawai`i Tourism Authority demonstrating the Spirit of Aloha and perpetuating the essence of Hawai`i. This award recognizes Na `Aina Kai’s miniature ahupua’a, in which bronze inhabitants are engaged in traditional daily activities including kappa-making, mat-weaving, canoe-making, fishing, hunting and planting. The depiction of this most integral part of Hawaiian history is the only one of its kind on Kaua`i. It offers visitors from the islands and around the world credible information about the Hawaiian culture in a way that is vivid and lasting.
